How Do Digital Home Scales Measure Body Fat?
Digital body fat scales use a method called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure body fat. A safe (and painless) electric current is sent through your body from your bare feet and meets varying degrees of resistance as it passes through your muscles, fat and bones. (Fat is not an electrolyte and cannot conduct electricity).
Based on the resistance encountered, the scale's software calculates the impedance, or resistance to the flow of electrical current. It then uses that impedance value, along with other factors such as height, weight, age, and gender (usually pre-entered) to estimate body fat percentage.
The scale uses equations or algorithms developed based on population studies to estimate body fat percentage. These equations take into account various factors that affect the flow of electricity through the body.
It's important to note that while digital scales can provide an estimate of body fat percentage, they may not always be completely accurate. Factors such as hydration levels, recent exercise, and individual differences in body composition can affect the results.
