Are body fat scales safe?

Mar 13,2025 Unique Scales

Body fat scales are generally considered safe, but there are some aspects to consider.

These scales work by sending a weak electrical current through the body (bioelectrical impedance analysis). The current passes more easily through water and muscle, which have a higher water content, and is more resistant in fat tissue. Based on the resistance measured, the scale estimates the percentage of body fat, along with other metrics like muscle mass and water content.

The electrical current used is extremely low and well within the safety limits set by international standards. It is so weak that you typically cannot even feel it when it passes through the body. This makes it unlikely to cause any direct harm to the body's physiological systems.

However, there are some situations where caution is advised. People with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators should avoid using body fat scales. The electrical signals from the scale could potentially interfere with the operation of these devices, although the risk is considered very low. Additionally, during pregnancy, while the risk to the mother and fetus from using a body fat scale is minimal, it's still a good idea to consult a healthcare provider first.

In conclusion, for the vast majority of people, body fat scales are safe to use. But if you have specific medical conditions or concerns, it's always best to check with a healthcare professional before using one.
